We are at a crossroads in history. More and more there is emphasis placed on creating “green” solutions, and the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) industry is no exception. Because of this, RSI makes sure that their graduates understand concepts and technologies as they relate to green applications in HVAC/R. By making sure RSI graduates are knowledgeable in the green solutions that have been part of the industry for a long time, RSI enables their graduates to succeed in the HVAC/R field for years to come.
Important Green Techniques Included in RSI’s Training Programs
Refrigerant Handling
One necessary training that RSI’s HVAC/R programs include is instruction on refrigerant handling. The Clean Air Act requires certification for refrigerant handling, so starting a refrigeration career without this training is very difficult. Not only does RSI train their students in refrigerant handling, they also provide the certificate testing. This means that RSI students can graduate with the necessary certification for refrigerant handling, as required by the EPA.
High Rated SEER Equipment
Another part of RSI’s green training involves instruction on the maintenance of high SEER equipment as well as older, less efficient equipment. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and it is a rating system used by the US Government to rate the efficiency of air conditioning equipment. In 1987 the SEER standard was 10, and in 2006 the standard was raised to 13. As technological developments continue to be made, SEER ratings will continue to rise, and standards will continue to rise with them. Because of these ever-increasing standards, it is important to understand how to work with the latest high efficiency equipment.

Enhanced Air Distribution Systems
One more technology in the RSI curriculum that applies to green concepts is the retrofitting of air distribution systems. Thanks to new technologies, it is possible to achieve higher levels of comfort and efficiency through making improvements of how air is circulated through a building. The key is to install ducting mechanisms and control systems which allow for better regulation over where air is delivered. These mechanisms can circulate air through high traffic areas where it is most needed, while circulating less air through lower traffic areas that don’t need it.
