Maintenance Engineering is the practice and career of applying engineering concepts toward the improvement of equipment and procedures in order to enhance their maintainability, reliability, and availability. As systems and equipment have become more complex over the years, the requirements of processes and devices required to maintain them have also become more complex, leading to the creation of Mechanical Maintenance Engineering as its own field and profession. A wide range of industries have come to rely on Maintenance Engineering Technicians to set up and maintain equipment within their facilities. Major areas of employment include semiconductor and electrical manufacturing, engineering, machinery manufacturing, scientific research and development, and motor vehicle parts manufacturing among others. Now, RSI is offering students the opportunity to benefit from an expanded program that will allow them the opportunity to earn a degree in just 15 months while studying in a blended learning curriculum of on-campus and online courses.

Electro-Mechanical Technologies Program

The first step in the RSI program for earning an Associate of Occupational Studies in Mechanical Maintenance Engineering is to complete the 9-month training course for Electro-Mechanical Technologies. This program is taught primarily through classroom learning and lab exercises. This course of study alone prepares students to serve as an entry-level HVACR Technician as well as Maintenance Electrician positions. Electro-Mechanics is the combination of both electrical and mechanical processes, encompassing work on devices that use electricity to carry out their functions. The program provides students with knowledge of fundamental information on heating and refrigeration systems, electricity, photovoltaic science, residential and commercial wiring, residential and commercial comfort systems, and HVAC troubleshooting. Overlapping with Mechanical Maintenance Engineers, Electro-Mechanical Technicians work in the utilities, manufacturing, and research and development industries. Their work often involves installing, maintaining, and upgrading mechanical systems with either electronic or computer-controlled components.

Mechanical Maintenance Engineering Associate’s Program

After the 9-month Electro-Mechanical Technologies Program is completed, the Associate of Occupational Studies in Mechanical Maintenance Engineering program can begin. After the practical skills training of the Electro-Mechanical Technologies courses, the Mechanical Maintenance Engineering portion is 6 months of online coursework. For students looking to pursue a Mechanical Maintenance Engineering career, this vocational program from RSI will give them an academic background that builds upon the material from the lower division classes and reinforces theoretical knowledge of mechanical engineering. The online experience of this series affords students a greater flexibility while ensuring that class availability is never an issue.
