The use of solar technology is increasing in popularity as more and more people are using energy from the sun in an effort to become greener. Additionally, the government is backing the installation of solar products through subsidies and incentive programs. Due to the growing use of solar technology, the demand for solar installation technicians is rising to assist individuals and organizations with incorporating solar equipment into their operations. The education for solar installation technicians can take as little as six weeks to complete. Online solar installation training programs enable students to complete their education while still maintaining their current job or other obligations.

Admissions Requirements

Many online solar installation training programs feature open enrollment to enable individuals to start courses at any time. These programs often do not have prerequisites, but students are often responsible for gaining access to the Internet and keeping up with their coursework.

Description of Solar Installation Programs

Online solar education programs provide individuals with a solid overview of the basic aspects of the solar industry and the fundamentals of electricity. Students learn about current technologies for photovoltaic systems, commonly called PV systems. Many programs cover a variety of topics, such as the components of systems, design and installation, safety procedures, and things that affect performance. The online courses are commonly based on the same curriculum as in-person programs. Some programs even prepare students to take the PV or Solar Heating Entry Level Examination administered by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP).

What to Expect in Online Programs

Many vocational courses are interactive and feature actual scenarios and practice activities. Some programs also feature simulation technology. The online learning platform is usually equipped with multimedia presentations, chat opportunities, threaded discussion forms, self-assessments, and various online resources. Students are able to complete all assignments online and submit them via email, assignment drop box, or other virtual method. Any tests or quizzes are also completed online. Students typically have unlimited access to course materials, such as recorded lectures, lecture notes, discussions, and reading material so that they may easily refer back to previous lessons to review.

Examples of Course Topics

  • Basics of electricity
  • Conservation of energy
  • Types of solar systems
  • How solar electricity works
  • Safety of solar energy
  • Balance of solar systems
